"I usually say that breastfeeding runs in the family! The beauty of the act of breastfeeding was already part of my preparation for motherhood thanks to the gift of my cousin and lactation consultant, Taís Archanjo. There was a lot of valuable information about gold drops, golden hour, milk coming in, etc.
I started to imagine, during almost my entire pregnancy, the moment when my baby would come into my arms so we could experience our golden hour, considering everything I talked about with my family and friends who had this experience.
Unfortunately, our golden hour didn't happen. The natural birth did not happen. The placenta didn't help and as in every emergency, fear took over.
The golden drops didn't arrive after the cesarean section, but with the singular dedication of my husband, the hospital's lactation consultant, the nurses and my cousin, the first drop appeared in the middle of many manual maneuvers that make the “breast” of the mom “hurts” for love.
My husband and I followed the guidelines and maintained the milk expression protocols, the drops came and went in a syringe straight to visit our baby, even before we had our first encounter with our treasure.
And the fear was still with me, because the hospital, by starting to offer artificial milk and nipples, puts us in a vulnerable position with the doubt as to whether the dream of breastfeeding will still have a chance to come true.
Finally, a few days after the birth of our treasure, when we arrived home, he started learning to suck, smelling his mommy and the magic happened… our golden hour has been happening every day for almost 5 months!
My story about breastfeeding was another learning experience, with resilience and confidence in the process. Today, in addition to the “boob hours”, we were able to express and store the drops of gold that I had been waiting for so long.
My wish is that all mothers and future mothers experience the process, trusting and learning lightly, as my story with breastfeeding is proof that no matter how difficult the process is, pain is part of the legacy we leave through our children."
