“Breastfeeding journeys really are “journeys”! Those first few days were so tough and overwhelming… endless attempts to get the latch, worrying about baby getting enough, feeling pressure from society and unhelpful nurses, then feeling like a failure. There’s the toe-curling feeling as they suck, cracked nipples for weeks, backache - ongoing! But eventually me and my little girl got there together.

Between the pain and exhaustion of breastfeeding, there are quiet moments in the middle of the night where it is just the two of you. The little noises they make that comfort you when the rest of the world is fast asleep. When they are snuggled in your arms, safe and happy, looking into your eyes, it gives you the reassurance you need that you are right where you are meant to be and you are all they need.

Looking back, I feel like wished that time away for so long because my baby wouldn’t take a bottle and I was missing my independence, the freedom of going anywhere WITHOUT a tiny human glued to me.

My second baby is here now. She is the happiest little thing but wow is time flying, maybe even faster second time round! I’ve been breast-feeding her exclusively for 5 months because she is another smart bub and not taking a bottle. I’ve felt the familiar frustration and resentment. But with this girl’s love of food and early weaning, I have a feeling that this breast-feeding journey will be shorter, which makes me sad. But it encourages me to embrace it, enjoy it, and treasure all the little stages you go through. Together, as a new mum again, and baby.

One day I will look back on these days and wish for one more midnight cuddle. To see a cute little nose scrunching in desperation to latch, a smile on their contented face, a tiny hand resting on my chest… and to look down and feel nothing but love in those big blue eyes. 🥹”
